Between the Outeniqua mountains and the Indian Ocean, the Garden Route strings together forest, lakes and coastline: Mossel Bay, George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and on to Plettenberg Bay. The riding moves from sea-level tar to indigenous-forest gravel in a single day.
The signature line is the old Seven Passes road between George and Knysna — a nineteenth-century wagon route that dips and climbs through river gorges and indigenous forest, most of it quiet gravel. Around Wilderness and Sedgefield the lakes district offers flat, glassy loops; Knysna adds forest singletrack and the famous heads; and the coastal tar towards Plettenberg Bay rolls past some of the best beaches in the country. Our Cross-Cape journey rides this whole corridor on its way from Plettenberg Bay to Cape Town.
