The Concept

Extreme demands.
Unyielding luxury.

The conceptualisation and execution of a point-to-point gravel bicycle expedition through the Cederberg and Karoo requires a meticulous balancing of extreme physiological demands with frictionless luxury.

The traverse initiates at the ancient rock art sanctuaries of the Cederberg reserve, pivots to the deeply authentic, fire-hosted exclusivity of an off-grid Cederberg farmstead, pushes into otherworldly sandstone cave suites, and finally plunges into the arid extremes of the Karoo to culminate at a luxury tented camp.

"The luxury infrastructure scales alongside the accumulated fatigue of the rider — transitioning from traditional five-star hospitality to rugged authenticity, and ending in an unprecedented private wellness sanctuary."

The Route

The Stages

235 km · 3,820 m climbing · Cederberg → Karoo

Itinerary subject to change. Routes shaped around group and conditions.

Day 1
Cape Town to the Cederberg
Transfer From Cape Town · Wilderness Reserve Arrival
Arrival
The expedition begins with a transfer north from Cape Town to a wilderness reserve and wellness retreat in the northern foothills of the Cederberg. The afternoon is yours: walk out to the rock art, swim, or sit still and let the mountains do the work. Nothing is scheduled.
Day 2
Into The Cederberg
Off-Grid Farmstead · Fire Kitchen Dinner
65km
Moderate
The first riding day. 65km from the reserve to a historic Cederberg farmstead operating completely off-grid. No electricity, no signal. As dusk falls the property is lit only by paraffin lanterns and candles, and the billion-star Cederberg sky takes over.
Day 3
The Queen Stage
The Queen Stage · Cave Suites · Open-Air Boma Dining
91km
Hard
The Queen Stage. 91km pushing deeper into the Swartruggens Conservancy, finishing at otherworldly sandstone cave suites — hewn directly into the ancient rock face. The day's effort is met with the reserve's bespoke pamper packages and open-air Boma dining beneath an unpolluted night sky.
Day 4
Final Descent To The Karoo
Final Descent · R356 Gravel · Karoo Arrival
80km
Hard
The final stage. 80km of deep Karoo gravel along the R356, descending into the arid extremes of the Inverdoorn region. The expedition culminates at a luxury tented camp on a rewilded private reserve, the pinnacle of the trip's luxury trajectory.
Day 5–6
Rest, Recover, Rewild
Private Wellness Sanctuary · Game Drives · Conservation
Own Activities
Two nights with no fixed schedule. Private wellness facilities attached to every suite. Morning and afternoon game drives across the reserve, and time alongside the conservation team. Departure by transfer back to Cape Town.

Where You Stay

Four Lodges. One Trajectory.

An indicative expedition design. Properties, routing and inclusions are confirmed with you at the time of booking and are subject to availability.

The luxury infrastructure scales alongside the accumulated fatigue of the rider — from traditional five-star hospitality to rugged, off-grid authenticity, ending in an extraordinary private wellness sanctuary.

A Cederberg Wilderness Reserve
Night 1 · Five-Star Wilderness Retreat

An ecological oasis in the northern foothills of the Cederberg, on land that holds ancient San rock art. Dining across a historic homestead and an open-air pavilion, paired with a serious cellar. The spa primes the body with native rooibos and buchu treatments before the first pedal stroke.

An Off-Grid Farmstead
Night 2 · Off-Grid Cederberg Farmstead

A beautifully restored Cederberg farmstead, operating completely off-grid — no electricity, no mobile signal. As dusk falls the property is lit only by paraffin lanterns and candles, the billion-star sky dominating the visual field. Dinner is hosted personally in a fire kitchen built around an indoor fire pit, paired with wines from the high-altitude Cederberg vineyards nearby.

Sandstone Cave Suites
Night 3 · Hewn Into The Rock

In the Swartruggens, ultra-luxurious cave suites are hewn directly into dramatic, otherworldly sandstone rock formations. The thermal mass of the rock keeps the suites naturally cool by day and warm by night — a natural cocoon for muscular recovery after the Queen Stage. Evening dining in the open-air Boma, centred around a roaring fire beneath an unpolluted night sky.

A Private Karoo Reserve
Nights 4–5 · Private Reserve, Karoo

The expedition's terminus and the absolute pinnacle of its luxury trajectory. Monumental tented spa suites positioned along a tranquil Karoo dam. Every suite has its own fully integrated private wellness sanctuary — including steam room, cold plunge, and twin in-suite massage beds. Strictly adults-only, operating on a philosophy of complete self-conservation. Morning and afternoon game drives, and time alongside the conservation team, close the journey.
