The most famous stretch of road cycling in South Africa. Chapman's Peak Drive hangs off the cliff face between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, nine kilometres of curves with the Atlantic straight below, and it opens the door to the full Cape Point loop: Misty Cliffs, Scarborough, the Good Hope gate and the lighthouse at the end of the continent.
From the city the classic loop runs 100 to 140 kilometres depending on where you start: out through Hout Bay, over Chapman's Peak, down the Noordhoek valley, through Kommetjie, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough to the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, and back along the False Bay side through Simon's Town and Kalk Bay. Chappies itself is a paced, honest climb from either side, never brutal, always spectacular. It is the road every visiting cyclist has on their list, and the marquee kilometres of the Cape Town Cycle Tour route.
The Cape summer, November to March, brings long dry days and the famous south-easter; mornings are calmest. Winter riding between fronts is some of the best of the year: still, green and quiet. Chapman's Peak is a managed toll road that occasionally closes in high wind or after rockfall, so we always check the day's status before rolling.
We run guided Cape Town road days that thread Chappies and Cape Point with coffee stops the guidebooks miss, vehicle support if you want it, and a pace set around your group. Visiting with no bike? Our premium Specialized fleet delivers to your hotel.
