Cederberg gravel

Three hours north of Cape Town, the Cederberg is sandstone country: fire-orange rock arches, rooibos farms, star-thick nights and a spine of mountain gravel that includes the Uitkyk Pass — one of the most beautiful unsurfaced climbs in the Cape.

The classic line runs in from Citrusdal or Clanwilliam to Algeria in the mountains' green heart, then up the Uitkyk Pass — a steady, switchbacked gravel climb that tops out among rock formations glowing red at either end of the day. Beyond it the road rolls on past Dwarsrivier and the Stadsaal caves towards Wupperthal, the Moravian mission village at the range's far edge. Distances are honest, water points are few, and the reward is riding through a wilderness area that feels untouched because it largely is.

The Cederberg is the home range of our two signature expeditions: the Cederberg Traverse, nine to ten days through the full range, and the Cederberg Skyline, four days of ultra-luxury point-to-point across the range. Both ride the Uitkyk. Both are fully supported.
